The first meeting of the
members of the association to make arrangements for a new
cemetery was held at the LaPorte County Court House,
August 1, 1856. The first interment in the Pine Lake
Cemetery was in 1858. Immediately after its organization
the trustees invited proposals form all owning real estate
in the vicinity of the city for the sale of such lands as
were suitable for cemetery purposes. All offered were
visited and carefully considered, and the result was the
selection of that portion of the county farm which lay south
of its bisection highway and east of the Michigan City
Plank Road.
Pine Lake Cemetery has always been integrated,
regardless of race or religion. The trustees feel that they
can safely guarantee the proper care and maintenance of the
grounds for all time to come, without assessment or any
demand whatever upon lot owners. The purchase money not only
pays for the lot but provides for its perpetual care and
maintenance. The main entrance to the cemetery is from
U.S. HWY 35 with a secondary entrance from Severs
Road.
